We’re On The Water
Blimey, I’m sore today, sunburned knees and aching all over. But it was all worth it because I was invited to the second Annual Travel Industry Regatta organised by the Family Holiday Association this week.
Derek, our friend at Kuoni, had sponsored a boat and it was a privilege to be invited.
But this was to be no gin palace pleasure cruise; you are right in there from the get-go. Clearly those that had participated last year knew the drill. This was 19 boats racing for the title. Vying for an advantageous starting position, was (to the untrained eye) chaos, boats came within feet of each other before the gun. And they were off. The uninitiated looking shocked, including myself.
Three races in total lay ahead of us. Out on the Solent, making mental notes of the landmarks, Portsmouth, Isle of Wight, Quarr Abbey, Osborne House. Each crewmember was given a role on board but didn’t have much time to acquaint themselves with their new task, I was on boom and spinnaker detail – hence the aching all over. The spinnaker was up, then it was down again, up then down again. This is fun right? Feeling ropey (sorry).
It sure was fun as the sun shone all day, hence the sunburn. The chat and banter were superb and a bundle raised for a mighty fine cause. It felt like a proper adventure on the high seas
Did we win? Well we felt like winners with a big cheer from the all the crew as we crossed the line.
Thank you Kuoni. Thank you, Family Holiday Association.
We will be back in 2016.
